More on Brute Have Him Fixed or not!?

By Lori Martin of Comfy Dog boots & Shoes

Hi everyone. What a beautiful day up here in Northern Maine. My last intel was about Brute being so sick. Well everyone was right he snapped out of it. He is doing great with pedigree for food and I have it in a spot where the mice can't get to it.He is eating AND FEELING SO MUCH BETTER. BACK TO BE THE LITTLE NAUGHTY WESTY HE WAS MENT TO BE. LOL
I still have the little problem of him marking his territory in my house. Not the rugs any more since now he has become a man and is lifting his little leg. ON MY COUCH CORNERS.
Now I have heard from a few different people that if I get him fixed he will not need to do that anymore.
I know he is getting out enough because I am home sewing now so he is on and out all day. I can but him out for an hour and he still feels the need to use my couch.
So That's the question.
Do I get him fixed and this will change. Any other ideas fo me.
I tell ya the new rug washer with furniture attachments that i got for christmas has really been used alot LOL

I am a work at home mom. I have a wonderful family with my youngest being 3 years old and her best friend My 1 year old Brute (a naughty little westhiemer terrier) I am 43 and loving life. I am so happy I am able to be home with my last little gift to watch her grow (way to fast) Jasmine.

Your little Brute is not broken so how can you fix him? Castration seems to be a cure for everything but it really isn't - indeed, it can cause serious damage to a young dog and certainly will not emasculate him enough to prevent his instinct to mark his territory.
You must deep clean everywhere that he marks so that his nose will not detect any smell - you see, he isn't marking 'fresh' he is renewing old marks.
Catch him in the act and make sure he knows how upset you are - the little guy wants to please you - show him how.

Thank you for the advice. I guess I used the wrong words as in (fixed) because he is definatly not broken . Daddy says he is going to the vets though he is tired of wet socks.LOL

I think that "Brute" need a little consentrated training on consequences. I might suggest a rolled-up newspaper that crosses his back-side as soon as he attempts to mark a spot in the house. This will not hurt him, but will show your displeasure with him. He then gets put outside or put into a pen if you have one. Just be firm, don't hit with your hand. The hand is saved for affection.
Thanks for sharing.
Best wishes.

I had a pen when we first got him and I gave it away. I wanted him to be part of the family and not have to be locked up. I guess that was my first mistake with the training. The paper is a good idea because he gets lots of loves and rough play with the hands so he wouldn't understand that :-0 it's always playtime LOL Thank you for your input and I look forward to more of your intels

Gosh, I don't know if there's any other solution. My retarded mutt keeps peeing on the front door every time he is excited even though he knows I hates it and I deep clean it with cleaning solution then lots of pure bleach. I'd definitely get Brute neutered, the sooner the better, though a name change may be in order too. Gonads cause nothing but trouble. I should add that I'd have cut my own off years ago if it weren't socially unacceptable. Seriously.

Thanks so much for being so brutally honest:-0
I guess he is on his way to a vet visit LOL
I just hope he keeps all his spunk. he has a blast with my little girl. It's like having 2 toddlers in the house.

You will also probably have to take Brute for years and years of Animal Psychiatrist Counseling to recover from the mental stress created when he finds out you have been discussing this with us "professionals" (grin)

LOL This is true But he sure doesn't mind all the attention

My daughter is quite an expert on dogs. She says the best way to house-break a puppy is to keep it in a crate when it is sleeping. Then immediately take the dog outside when it wakes up. Dogs do not like to wet their bed if possible. Then place newspapers at strategic locations. When he is used to using the papers as his bath, carry them outside.

Yes That is where i messed up. I had a crate but didn't like putting him in it. And know he can be outside for an hour and still come right in and do his marking. He is such a little man!
