BRUTE!!!! Again!!!
By Lori Martin of Comfydogboots.com
Wow I missed last weeks topic.I just couldn't find the time, but today I almost lost Brute and it was right in front of jasmine. We where heading out to the store and she opened the door and there he went. There is no way I am faster then a a 3 year old little girl and a 1 year old westy. I have a hook right at the door because he loves being outside but he is not afraid of the road. I just didn't get there quick enough. And of course when he makes his escape it is a big game of chasing and playing. I have learned to try and stay in one spot and just call him other wise he thinks it is a game. It didn't work this time I was trying to keep Jazz up in the drive way and call him back with a ham bone (bribery). Didn't work and I swear he ran into the tire of the truck the came to screeching holt. I think he has 9 lives like a cat because this is not the first time. And he is so dam fast I can't catch him. Well after giving several drivers and myself heart failier he decided to come get the bone. And a whole lot of hell from me. Of course this is all right in front of my 3 year old who is his best friend so we where all in tears and she was also telling him how naughty he was. I am really considering the shock collar. He is just so dam stubborn. I would rather be able to stop him with a jolt then to watch him get hit by a car. I don't know of anything else to do.! Any other ideas that would work as immediatly as a sudden stop would be much appreciated.
I am a work at home mom. I have a wonderful family with my youngest being 3 years old and her best friend My 1 year old Brute (a naughty little westhiemer terrier) I am 43 and loving life. I am so happy I am able to be home with my last little gift to watch her grow (way to fast) Jasmine.

I don't own any pets. Some types of dogs are "runners". Talk to someone who is an expert. I'm sure there's a way to do this.
I like the sound of Brute. He has got you under the proverbial thumb. First of all you must not let a door be opened while Brute is not on a lead - he has already got you playing 'chase' games by being naughty. Please think about those last eleven words. Brute has trained you to play his favourite game. If he does escape, it is pretty obvious that you live in an area that is not suitable for a small stray dog, you must NOT chase him. Chasing him rewards him for the error - also the fact that you are 'barking' at him tells him that you must be having fun as well. It is very hard to do but if Brute runs off again you must call him back only ONCE. If he does not obey, you must turn your back on him and go back indoors. Face it, he is less likely to run into traffic if you aren't playing 'chase' with him. If you won't play, he will probably return fairly quickly to find out what you do want to play. Then take time to teach him to respond to 'here' so that he will always obey you. Shock collars are for criminals on parole - not dogs.

I knew in my heart that you would give me some good sound advice! I am just afraid that turning my back on him he will still run in that road he has no clue it seems how much danger is in that split second. I understand it is a mean way to teach him I just hate the thought of seeing him learn the hard way. Dead
As you know I have a large website about dogs. http://www.dog-first-aid-101.com and everything I have read and learned is you must train your dog for his or her own safety. Check out this page it might help you. http://www.dog-first-aid-101.com/dog-obedience-training.html
I have seen people run their dogs into harms way by chasing them. It is sometimes necessary to appear to be cruel to be kind. One thing that you can be absolutely certain of (as you have already seen) chase him and he WILL go into the traffic. You need to teach him that 'here' means he is going to get a special treat, either something nice to eat like one of his favourite (small) treats or lots of loving. By giving Brute 'a whole lot of hell' you are actually teaching him that there is no point in coming back because you will not be happy and you will not be loving to him. Brute does not understand your fears - you must ALWAYS make a big fuss and be loving when he comes to you - even if you have had to chase him from here to kingdom come! Make coming back more fun than running away. He's a bright little dog - he will learn quickly if taught consistently.
